Meet Smart Transmission Decision-Makers
from South Africa

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency is convening South African government and private sector stakeholders with U.S. industry leaders to discuss smart transmission technical, regulatory, and enabling environment topics. Through a series of high-level panels, presentations, roundtables, and an expo featuring leading smart transmission technology, the event will explore how U.S. companies can support advancements in South Africa's transmission sector.

Background INformation

For more than 15 years, "load shedding," or rolling blackouts caused when sufficient electricity cannot be supplied to meet demand, has been a daily occurrence in South Africa. As the country works to address this challenge, including through renewable installations under its Just Energy Transition Plan, South Africa's transmission networks require expansion and modernization. Smart transmission technologies like energy storage and smart grids can help by managing the variability of renewable sources like solar and wind, allowing renewable generation projects from remote locations to connect to the national grid.

South Africa’s state-owned electric utility, Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd (Eskom), is investing billions of dollars and partnering with USTDA to explore innovative solutions for South Africa’s grid. Eskom’s plans include new transmission projects and corridors, upgrades to existing substations, and cross-border projects to establish a regional power market. These plans present significant business prospects for cutting edge technologies to support South Africa’s Just Energy Transition.
